Manu Joni

Biography:

Manu Joni shared leadership with Hawa Sanja of the Bom women’s singing and dancing performances for the DKB team. Manu, who was probably in her late fifties at the time, also spearheaded the recorded interviews, asking others questions with the hard-nosed manner of a CNN reporter. Although her Bom vocabulary was more limited than that of Hawa Sanja, Manu recorded a number of reminiscences and conversations for the DKB team. She spoke bitterly of a difficult childhood, in which she was orphaned and indentured to a cruel woman who once punished her by setting a red-hot iron pot on Manu’s bare head.
